WHY NOW? BECAUSE STEREOTYPES ARE HARD TO KILL AND THE ONE WHICH SAYS, THAT WOMENS ARE NOT MADE FOR SCIENCES IS VERY VERY HARD TO BREAK.
Mariam was the first woman to win this prize. MARIAM opened the doors for a lot of young girls who kows that it's possible to reach the highest level in sciences if you really want it.
You know that womens can do it, of course(or you should), but to see the beautiful smile of MARIAM when she receives the prize is way more powerful than a thousand words.
